This design looks like a stretch but that’s what people said about the plan to build the first XO. It’s funny that now the design looks iPad-like, though I think this concept was originally released prior to the current hoopla. Wonder what the OS interface will look like. Sticking with Sugar or or going in a different direction?

• OLPC’s Give One Get One initiative has delivered around 11,000 XO-1 laptops to Afghanistan schools alone. But power is a problem when you get off the grid, so the team there has had to think outside the box.
• They’ve developed this prototype human powered machine that can charge an XO-1 laptop while in use, and it’s easy enough for most 3rd graders to pedal. The OLPC Freeplay hand crank is connected to pedals underneath, and no backup battery is required.

Will children in the developing world learn to use guns or computers? Widespread child prostitution and wars that engage children as soldiers will not be overcome easily. OLPC may not be the decisive factor here, but it is a step in the right direction.
