XO-3 is a stunning touchscreen tablet device that has been scheduled to release on 2010 for the One Laptop Per Child project by Yves Behar. This innovative $75 tablet features an all plastic, extremely durable and semi-flexible body that eliminates the possibility of being cracked upon impact like the traditional glass screens. Like previous XO, the screen of XO-3 can also be optimized in both reflective and transmissive modes depending on indoor and outdoor lightingsituations. To make it serve its purpose effectively, the XO-3 is packed with kid’s learning tools such as horizontal book mode and portrait reading mode for convenient reading, multi-touch feature allows play and learn by using bare hands, a full-touch keyboard, a back facing camera, and many more.

This design looks like a stretch but that’s what people said about the plan to build the first XO. It’s funny that now the design looks iPad-like, though I think this concept was originally released prior to the current hoopla. Wonder what the OS interface will look like. Sticking with Sugar or or going in a different direction?

OLPC’s Give One Get One initiative has delivered around 11,000 XO-1 laptops to Afghanistan schools alone. But power is a problem when you get off the grid, so the team there has had to think outside the box.

They’ve developed this prototype human powered machine that can charge an XO-1 laptop while in use, and it’s easy enough for most 3rd graders to pedal. The OLPC Freeplay hand crank is connected to pedals underneath, and no backup battery is required.

Will children in the developing world learn to use guns or computers? Widespread child prostitution and wars that engage children as soldiers will not be overcome easily. OLPC may not be the decisive factor here, but it is a step in the right direction.

If you bork your laptop, you can supposedly hit the ‘O’ button on the gamepad during the boot for the recovery process. That didn’t work for me, so I re-flashed the machine by booting from a USB flash drive using the secure upgrade method. That way you get the latest Sugar version.

The Ur-Quan Masters is an open source version of the classic game Star Control 2. Pretty good play on the XO. Install through terminal by typing yum install uqm and run with the command uqm

OLPC revives Give One, Get One program with Amazon.com:

The opportunity to comercially purchase an XO laptop is coming back in November through Amazon. The machines will dual boot between Sugar and Windows XP. I would prefer that Microsoft kept its grubby hands off, but maybe it will add to the usefulness of the platform. Or it will just add bloat.
